A recent article in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA) identifies B12 deficiencies as a result of antacid medications. B12 deficiencies are associated with anemia, headaches, confusion, tiredness, constipation, moodiness, memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, infertility, cancers, psychosis, Multiple Sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration, brain shrinkage, and other conditions. Antacid medications include Proton Pump Inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, and Nexium) or H2 Receptor antagonists (Tagamet, Zantac, Ranitidine). The recent awareness of B12 as an additional deficiency created by the use of these medications will eventually make its way to becoming yet another Black Box warning on their labels.
Low levels of Hydrochloric acid (HCL) in the stomach causes a loss of absorption of protein, iron, iodine, B12, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and other minerals. This was known long before this class of medications first came along in the 1970s. If one wishes to skip to the end of this story, all Black Box warnings for antacid medications should read:
“Can lead to loss of absorption of Protein, Iron, Iodine, B12, Folic acid, Zinc, Calcium, Magnesium, and other vitamins and minerals leading to sickness, serious diseases, and some forms of cancer!”
Medical doctors won’t be able to help you out here, as they no longer understand the physiology of the body and how medications affect it. This knowledge has been replaced by pharmaceutical protocols.
The use of antacid medications for gastritis, ulcers, and acid reflux is shown to create fungal candida overgrowth in the body. The use of antibiotics also creates fungal candida overgrowth that leads to the low levels of HCL and the cycles of under- and over-production that cause gastritis, ulcers, and acid reflux. Fungal candida is present on both sides of the problem, both as a cause for the use of antacids and a result of their usage. Either way, it’s present. Either way, it needs to be addressed.
