What Is Candida?
Definition: Candida is an organism that normally lives in your intestinal tract as harmless yeast, co-existing with over 5,600 other species of micro-organisms.
Candida albicans has the ability to change from normal yeast to a pathogenic fungus. Antibiotic use is the primary cause of Candida converting to its fungal form. Other causes include chemotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs and conditions, and steroids.
The fungal form creates excessive toxicity that will affect the way every organ, tissue, and cell functions. Systemic Candida occurs when fungal Candida has spread throughout the body.
Systemic Candida can contribute to or create many problems in the body. Common major Candida symptoms may include: sugar or sweet cravings, gas, bloating, fatigue, low energy, allergies, sinusitis, acid reflux, hormonal imbalances, brain fog, depression and arthritis.

Do You Have Candida?
There are many good tests available to determine whether you have Candida. The "Candida Spit Test" is not a valid test for Candida as it may indicate the presence of: yeast, mold, fungus, allergies, bacteria, viruses, cold weather, changes in weather, or dehydration.
Candida Testing
Q. Are there tests I can take to see if I have a Candida problem?
A. Testing for Candida albicans antibodies has drawbacks, as the sensitivity, or accuracy, of tests varies from person to person and test to test. False positives may result from various influences, past or present. If blood tests are done prior to the immune system developing a response to Candida infections, then there may be a false-negative test result. If the immune system is suppressed or fatigued from a longstanding infection, then a false-negative test result may also be present. If the immune system has been sensitized, but the infection is no longer present, it may produce a false-positive. While all tests can be useful, it is hard to determine the accuracy from any one test.
Recommended Candida Tests:
Each of these tests listed here include a phone consultation with Dr. Jeff McCombs to interpret the results of your test.
- GI Effects Complete Profile by Metametrix - Stool PCR testing uses DNA analysis to identify microbiota including anaerobes, a previously immeasurable area of the gut environment. GI Effects is unlike any other stool analysis profile, going beyond the standard parameters for identifying gastrointestinal disorders.
- Gastrointestinal Health Panel by DiagnosTechs - A good combination of stool and saliva analysis, the GI Health Panel is a non-invasive screen of the gastrointestinal tract and its function. It includes 15-22 individual, yet related tests. Stool and saliva samples are submitted by the patient after home collection.
- Organic Acids Test by Great Plains Labs - The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria using a urine specimen. It measures the byproducts of Candida metabolism.
- Candida Immune Complex by Genova Diagnostics - This test evaluates blood for the immune response to Candida albicans. It looks for signs of the body have been exposed to Candida previously, and is the least sensitive of the tests offered.
The best way to use testing information is to do several tests in conjunction with each other, combined with a case history, present signs and symptoms, past history of antibiotic use, and whether or not you’ve done a Candida cleanse and experienced any results.
If You Have Ever Taken An Antibiotic...
"After years of analyzing the research on Candida albicans, gastroenterology, immunology, microbiology, biology, mycology, and several other related fields, I view the true test of whether or not someone has Candida as simple as this:
If you have ever taken an antibiotic at any time in your life, then you have systemic fungal Candida." – Dr. Jeffrey McCombs, The Candida Expert

| 1950's Candida Diet | Nystatin - doesn't work systemically against Candida. Has known side-effects/drug interactions. Causes development of resistant strains. |
Contains sugar. |
Antiquated diet based on an attempt to "starve" the Candida of sugars and complex carbs. When Candida is deprived of food sources, it goes systemic. |
|||
| Can-Sol | Like many herbs, these contain tannins that have fungistatic properties. This can inhibit fungus, but not eliminate it. Additionally, the greasewood (chapparal) has to be used cautiously in people with kidney dysfunction, gout, rheaumatoid arthritis, and liver problems. |
|||||
| Cancidas | Prescription strength antifungals can promote development of resistant strains, severe side-effects, and drug interactions, Can promote further long-term imbalances. |
Contains sugar. Sucrose, mannitol, glacial acetic acid, and sodium hydroxide. |
||||

Candida Treatment Videos:

Neutralize
Candida in its fungal (mycelial) form is difficult if not impossible to starve or eliminate. That's why Dr. McCombs' Candida Plan uses Candida Force, a safe natural anti-fungal, to neutralize the fungal Candida and convert it back to its harmless yeast form. As a yeast cell, Candida is naturally eliminated by the immune system. Candida Force is taken from Week 1 – Week 8 of Dr. McCombs' Candida Plan. Learn more about Candida Force
Eliminate
Dr. McCombs' Candida Plan Diet is a tried-and-tested eating plan that eliminates factors that have been promoting growth of fungus, bad bacteria and mucous. The "Yes Foods" on Dr. McCombs' Candida Plan are:
- All meats (except pork)
- Vegetables
- Fruits (except oranges) Why is fruit okay? (link to FAQ)
- Eggs
- Brown rice (short or long grain)
- Brown rice cakes (plain)
- Brown rice cereal (hot)
- Tea, Coffee
- Recommended oils for cooking or seasoning: cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, coconut, apricot or almond oils (most other oils are toxic to the body.)
- Seasonings include: Bragg's Liquid Amino Acids, salt, pepper, lemon, etc. (as long as there are no sugars, yeast, or anything not on the plan.)
- We recommend naturally raised and organic foods
Detoxifiy
There are three important steps to support your body in detoxifying while on Dr. McCombs' Candida Plan:
Sweating - A relaxing, daily cleansing process that supports the body’s largest detoxifying organ—the skin—in expelling toxins created by the Candida. Choose between a hot bath, dry sauna, hot tub, or steam room. Sweating is done 6 days per week for 10-15 minutes in a sauna, or 30-45 minutes in the bathtub (it takes most people about 10 minutes to begin sweating.) No other Candida plan utilizes sweating to detoxify. In our experience, the sweating protocol is one of the key reasons that people doing Dr. McCombs' Candida Plan report little or no "die-off reaction".
Detox Essentials – This Vitamin C, Echinacea, red clover and lemon bioflavinoids supplement supports your body in detoxifying throughout the 16-week plan. Detox Essentials boosts the immune system and purifies the lymphatic system.
Water – By drinking adequate amounts of water (1 Quart of water per 50 lbs. of body weight), you are flushing out toxins and keeping the body well hydrated.
Regenerate
Flora Prime is a high quality 12-strain probiotic supplement that re-establishes the normal tissue flora in the digestive tract and throughout the entire body. Probiotics support optimal health. Flora Prime is introduced on Week 7, after enough of the Candida has been neutralized and eliminated. Once reintroduced, these good bacteria establish a barrier that keeps the Candida in check. Probiotics taken before Week 7 may create some symptomatic relief, but probiotics taken before Week 7 or on their own cannot eliminate Systemic Candida.
